Changing India One Woman At A Time
|
|
Our program's purpose to create a safe place to train India's forsaken and destitute women is having a great impact on those who have come, studied and graduated with computer and office skills. Fortunately, many of these women are now employed in the work places of India. In the country of India, unless a female is fortunate enough to be born high caste chances are that her biological family will feel she is almost a curse to them because they must find the means to provide a dowry in order to make sure she can be married. Often these girl babies meet an early death because their family is too poor to keep them or at a young age they are turned out into the streets to make it on their own. The Women's Vocational College provides a safe haven for these girls, as well as business training so that they can be self-sufficient and live a dignified life. |

Update from Dr. P. J. Titus, Director, Women's Vocational College, Vizag
|
| Last year we had
twenty students: eighteen graduated and twelve were employed in the city.
A solid training program made these results possible and we are pleased
with this good report. This year we have twenty-three girls. One young lady
has already been placed in employment. She is a bright student who did well
in schooling. The others students will complete the course in February 2000.
We will try to place as many students as possible. Thirteen families are now empowered socio-economically with education, skill and income. Currently, another twenty families will be helped. Our program is impacting women and their future in India. This is a successful strategy. In four to five years we can train and place one hundred or more women in computer jobs. What a tremendous impact they will have! More computers are still needed, however, if we are to accomplish this noble goal. |
